Box 194 Bushton, Kansas 67427 (316) 562-3407 Population - 325 (estimated, 1996) Brief History Bushton was named for the attractive row of bushes extending from one edge of the site to the other. This town is the closest one to the geographical center of Kansas. The first sod house built in the community was in 1872. The mill was constructed in 1885 just before the Missouri Pacific entered the town. Early settlers included Bill Earl, Ben Bean, A. Weaver, and the Shonyo family. The first store building was a general store owned and operated by Fred Stehwien, Sr. Other businesses: J.E. Finnin Hotel, Belle Spring Creamery, Huebner Meat Market, Bushton State Bank, W.E. Appel & Co., and more.
